Getting Started: Before You Enter the Car
Your first lesson begins before you even start the engine. We’ll check your provisional licence and do a quick eyesight test to ensure you’re legally ready to drive. Bring your glasses if needed! We’ll also go over what you hope to achieve and how you learn best. This helps us customise your experience from day one. Feeling nervous is completely normal, and we’ll do our best to ease those worries right away. Our focus is on a calm, comfortable environment.
Understanding the Cockpit Drill
The Cockpit Drill is the foundation of every safe journey. It includes adjusting your seat, mirrors, and steering wheel, and checking doors and seatbelts—summed up in the DSSSM acronym. We explain why each step matters and how it builds safe habits. You’ll practise this drill until it becomes second nature. It’s a key step in learning responsibility as a driver. Most students enjoy seeing how much they’re already capable of by this stage.
Getting Familiar with Controls
Before moving off, you’ll learn about each control—the clutch, brake, accelerator, indicators, and gear stick. We break down what each one does and when you use them. You’ll also learn hand-over-hand steering and how to stay aware of your surroundings. We go at your pace to build your confidence. Hands-on practice makes this far less overwhelming than it seems.
Moving Off and Stopping Safely
Once you’re comfortable, we guide you through your first move. This includes using the mirrors, signaling, and pulling away smoothly. We give step-by-step instructions and gradually reduce assistance as you improve. Stopping safely is just as important, and we’ll teach you how to do it with full control. Expect to stay in a quiet area for this part. It’s all about building trust with the vehicle—and yourself.

By the end, you’ll know what to expect next and where you stand. We’ll provide feedback and set goals for future lessons. Whether you’re working on confidence, control, or awareness, we’ll tailor the plan to you. Your instructor is always open to questions and concerns. The first lesson lays the groundwork for steady progress ahead.
